For over a century, the concept of “fair chase” has been foundational for wildlife conservation and our continued opportunity to hunt. Theodore Roosevelt and the founders of the Boone and Crockett Club established the concept of fair chase and made it mainstream in 1887 when they started the organization — and it is just as relevant today as it was 140 years ago.

It’s a new year, and the 2026 legislative session is well underway. Issues that impact sportsmen and women are already being hotly debated at the State House. Public lands, wildlife connectivity, and other core conservation topics will feature prominently this session, as will the ongoing discussion around the appropriate place for advanced technology in our hunting seasons.

Dear Idaho Traditional Bowhunters, members, past, present & followers!

I’m writing to share the results of our 2026 elections, which were held on Thursday, January 8th, and to mark an exciting transition for our organization.

The iconic Clearwater elk populations and hunting are a thing of the past. The current dismal conditions began in the mid-1990s. The 1996/97 winter was an above-average snow year, which coincided with the introduction of wolves in Idaho.

A total of 91 people registered for the shoot in Meadows Valley this past weekend. The weather was beautiful for camping and shooting and socializing, making it a wonderful gathering of traditional archers and their families.

Mike Schlegel was awarded the Lee Gladfelter Memorial Award at the 34th Biennial Pope & Young Club convention. This award recognizes a wildlife professional who, through their efforts, has made a significant contribution to bowhunting and wildlife conservation.

We returned from a wonderful weekend of shooting with our Eagle Cap friends at the Rendezvous at the River (RATR) in the LaGrande, Oregon area along the Grand Ronde river. Quite a few Idaho folks made the trip from the southeastern part of the state to enjoy the beautiful scenery, camaraderie, and friendly competition of the archery community.
