Hello All!
A total of 91 people registered for the shoot in Meadows Valley this past weekend. The weather was beautiful for camping and shooting and socializing, making it a wonderful gathering of traditional archers and their families. The big barn was the center of the activities, with the new big block targets set up inside the barn so people could practice or do a warm up before going out onto the courses.

Two courses of 20 targets each were set on Friday with a good turnout of volunteers to help out. The wall tents were set up beside the barn, one for registration and the other for tables with the raffle and blanket shoot items. The courses opened on Friday afternoon, followed by the evening flashlight shoot.

Saturday morning registration opened for the Bowhunter Challenge and Blanket shoot. Saturday afternoon the speed shoot and great potato shoot were set up in the barn, the long distance shoot and bowbirds were down in the cow pasture below our camping area.
Blind doubles got underway Saturday evening for some friendly money-competition, Matt and Wyatt Garner took the pot! It was a busy weekend of shooting fun!

After our shoot awards, John Warford paid tribute to Mike Schlegel for his recent recognition from the Pope and Young Club, where Mike received the Lee Gladfelter Memorial Award. John read the article describing the “significant contribution to bowhunting and wildlife conservation” that Mike has offered and continues to offer. You can read the full article on our webpage. We are grateful to have Mike as our Director at Large, helping the club keep informed of important Fish and Game issues that impact our membership as traditional bowhunters.

After the raffle, which John Warford officiated, we had the target auction to pass on our worn targets. Thom Tash, our target master, identified which targets we could auction and still keep a good compliment of targets for our shoots. A major goal of having the target auction was to try to reduce the weight of the trailer contents. Shawn Carman acted as auctioneer and kept the bidding moving along with a total income from the target auction netting $685.00.
Targets auctioned were: skunk ($50), catalina goat ($70), boar ($65), racoon ($30), headless turkey ($70), stegosaurus ($65), bedded buck deer ($45), browsing buck deer ($110), Ibex ($180). We also sold the burlap targets for $10 each and gave away the disintegrating straw bales. Dave Hall worked hard to clean out the target trailer of things we don’t need. However, when we loaded it with all the remaining targets and various totes, tents, signs, and miscellaneous equipment, it seemed just as full as before!
Quinn Carman is creating a student news article for KTVB about ITB, and was doing interviews at the shoot, so look for that to be coming up in the future.
Madison Childers, aka stickbow-mama, and her husband were doing a video and drone video of the shoot, so check that out on her YouTube channel or Instagram. Traditional Archery is a fun, engaging sport, and it’s great to get the word out, and “pictures are worth a thousand words”. Especially in a beautiful site like New Meadows, with the white clouds floating in the blue sky and the lush green fields and forested hills inviting you to relax, breathe in the clear mountain air, and shoot some arrows!
Financial report:
After the cash was counted ($2570), the checks were totaled ($942 -note: Dennis Dunn donated $500 of this amount), the credit card charges were totaled ($432), we have an income from the shoot, target auction, and donations of $3944.00.
The expense list for the shoot will follow at the next club meeting which will be scheduled for August 14, Thursday at 6:30pmMST. Thom Tash will be inventorying the targets we currently have and we’ll be deciding what we might order if we need to replace some of the targets we auctioned off, so if you want a vote on that be sure and tune in to the Zoom meeting. Wayne Stutzman was paid for the target launcher he ordered for us: $1484.14. Club insurance is coming due this month: $1900.00. Ed Osborne was paid $300 for use of his ranch, Porta potties will bill us so I’m not sure how much that will be, but last year they were $525 for 3 units and 2 wash stations, same as we had this year.
Something also to consider: do we want to extend the length of this shoot so we have more time to enjoy shooting the targets once they are set up? Ed Osborne is fine with us staying longer if we want to have an “archery summer camp” for as much as a week between two weekends. First weekend to clear the site and to set up targets, shoot all week, second weekend to do novelty shoots and take down targets. Camping all week, come and go as you want. Does that sound like fun or too much? Show up at the Zoom meeting and we’ll talk.
Thanks to all our club members for your membership and participation. I appreciate you and am honored to be your president. I’ll be stepping down at the end of this year and Shawn Carman will take the position of president in January 2026. We need folks to step up and help out the club, specifically as vice president and secretary/treasurer. Please let Shawn or myself know if this is something you can contribute.
All for now, Happy fourth of July!
